Why Icynene?
The Icynene Insulation System® is a light-density spray foam insulation at only 0.5 pounds.
Icynene® is sprayed on in a thin layer, and is quickly filled with tiny open cells or air pockets to expand to 100 times. These air-filled cells help give Icynene® its great insulating and noise reduction properties, and the expansion of the foam keeps it in contact will surrounding surfaces so that it will never sag.
Icynene® can be used in new construction projects or even for home renovations. It can be used as a ceiling, attic, crawlspace, garage, or wall foam insulation.
When Icynene is sprayed into walls, ceilings, floors and basements, it quickly, but softly expands to form a protective barrier. Harmful outside air – including pollutants, allergens, and noise stays out. No harmful chemicals are emitted during application of the spray foam; only water is used. Icynene® improves the air quality inside your home and is also an environmentally friendly solution.
What is Icynene Made Of?
Icynene is composed of castor oil, an extraction from the castor plant. It is an all-natural ingredient that is often found in cosmetics and requires no chemical additives when producing the oil. It is also considered a renewable resource that does not compete with food crops for water.
How is Icynene® Spray Foam Installed?
There are two different ways to install Icynene® insulation:
- A technician can spray it onto any open surface or studded wall.
- For hard to reach places, or during renovations when the walls need to be kept intact, Icynene can be Injected into an existing uninsulated cavity.

What does Spray Foam look like?
After installation Icynene® is soft, flexible and very light. It has a ‘bubbly’ texture immediately after expansion of the foam, but will be relatively smooth when excess is shaven off for easy covering of the wall with plasterboard or other material.
When sprayed, Icynene® expands to one hundred times its initial volume within seconds to completely fill the space where it’s applied, including around any plumbing or fixtures to completely insulate the entire wall. Any extra Icynene® material is easily shaved off, for a surface that’s ready to be covered by drywall or approved thermal/fire barrier wall materials.
How Can Icynene® go where other insulations won’t?
Small areas have been a great hassle for insulators over the years. Tight corners, crawlspaces, small garages, ducts, around skylights and electrical boxes such as for light switches are just a few of the awkward and small areas in a home that are nearly impossible to insulate properly with conventional insulation. But these are no problem with Icynene®:
- Icynene® expands to fill every nook and cranny and is an effective barrier minimizing energy loss, outdoor pollutants and airborne moisture from air movement.
- Icynene® sticks fast to all surfaces it contacts. No need to worry about gaps or spaces in irregular shaped areas. Unlike other insulations which are famous for collapsing after a short period of time, Icynene® won’t shrink, settle or sag.
- Icynene® is perfect for cathedral ceiling applications and unvented attics. In fact, Icynene® is one of the few insulations approved for use in an unvented attic application, which can offer additional protection against wind and water damage during storms, the times when you need it most.
During Which Stage in New Home Construction is Icynene® Installed ?
It is the last installation to take place before drywall installation. All of these must be completed first:
- Windows, doors and roof installation
- The electrical, framing and plumbing inspections are complete
- Any other electrical or mechanical system located behind the drywall is installed
I Want To Install Icynene® Myself. Why isn’t it Sold in Stores?
Good question. DIY (do it yourself) spray foam insulation might look very cool, but here are some good reasons why it should only be installed by a licensed professional:
- Only an Icynene® Licensed Dealer and installer are trained to spray Icynene® properly to ensure it fills every space to create a complete air barrier system.
- Only an Icynene® Licensed Dealer and installer are trained to properly store Icynene®, to prepare it for spraying and to ensure it is properly applied in each area of your home.
- Only an Icynene® Licensed Dealer and installer will know how much Icynene®to apply to meet local code requirements.
Having a Licensed Dealer install Icynene® is the only way to ensure that you are getting the absolute best spray foam insulation system in your home or building.
How Much Icynene® Will Be Needed For My Home?
It depends on local building code requirements, the size and design of your home and on special considerations (for example, you may want Icynene® installed in interior walls to quiet sounds coming from a play room, theater room or even plumbing areas). Eco Tec Insulation will work with you to provide recommendation and an estimate.
How much does Icynene® Spray Foam Insulation Cost?
Icynene® is a premium insulation product and will typically cost a little more than most conventional insulation products. However, because Icynene® is an all-in-one insulation and air barrier system, it delivers greater energy savings that can provide a return on investment much higher than with conventional insulation.
