Eco Tec Insulation: What is Icynene®? The Icynene Insulation System® is a 1/2 pound or light-density spray foam insulation. Icynene® is filled with tiny open cells or air pockets. These cells help give Icynene® its great insulating properties, help it remain flexible and stay in contact with surrounding materials for a tight air-seal. Icynene® can be used in new home construction or for renovations. It can be used in walls, ceilings, attics, crawlspaces, over garages and in many other places. When sprayed into walls, ceilings, floors and basements, Icynene® softly expands to form a protective barrier. Harmful outside air - including pollutants and noise stays out. 100% water-blown, Icynene® improves the quality of the indoor air you breathe. It also reduces the number of indoor pollutants to help you breathe easier and is an environmentally-friendly soft foam insulation. How is The Icynene Insulation System® installed? There are two different ways to install Icynene® insulation: 1) Sprayed onto any open surface or studded wall. 2) Injected into an existing uninsulated cavity when renovating. What does Icynene® look like? After installation Icynene® is soft, flexible and very light. When sprayed, Icynene® expands to 100 times its initial volume within seconds to completely fill the space where it's applied. Any extra Icynene® material is easily shaved off, for a surface that's ready to be covered by drywall or approved thermal/fire barrier wall materials. ![]() Why does Icynene® go where other insulations won't? Rim joists, around windows and doors, crawlspaces, over garages, around skylights and electrical boxes are just a few of the awkward areas in a home that are difficult or impossible to insulate effectively with conventional insulation. But not with Icynene®: 1) Icynene® expands to fill every crack and crevice and is an effective air barrier minimizing energy loss, outdoor pollutants and airborne moisture. 2) Icynene® sticks to surrounding surfaces. No need to worry about gaps or spaces in irregular shaped areas. Unlike other insulations Icynene® won't shrink, settle or sag. 3) Icynene® is perfect for cathedral ceiling applications and unvented attics. In fact, Icynene® is one of the few insulations approved for use in an unvented attic application, which can offer additional protection against wind and water damage during storms. At what stage is Icynene® installed during new home construction? After the windows, doors and roof are in, the electrical, framing and plumbing inspections are complete, and after any other electrical or mechanical system located behind the drywall is installed. It is the last installation to take place before drywall installation. Why isn't Icynene® sold in stores so I can install it myself? Good question. Here are some good answers: 1) Only an Icynene Licensed Dealer and installer are trained to spray Icynene® properly to ensure it fills every space to create a complete air barrier system. 2) Only an Icynene Licensed Dealer and installer are trained to properly store Icynene®, to prepare it for spraying and to ensure it is properly applied in each area of your home. 3) Only an Icynene Licensed Dealer and installer will know how much Icynene® to apply to meet local code requirements. How much Icynene® will be needed for my home? It depends on local building code requirements, the size and design of your home and on special considerations (for example, you may want Icynene® installed in interior walls to quiet sounds coming from a play room, theater room or even plumbing areas). Eco Tec Insulation will work with you to provide recommendation and an estimate. How expensive is Icynene®? Icynene® is a premium insulation product and will typically be a little more expensive than most conventional insulation products. However, because Icynene® is an all-in-one insulation and air barrier system, it delivers greater energy savings that can help you get your money back faster than with conventional insulation. |
![]() Unlike many insulations, Icynene® can be sprayed directly to roof decking to create a conditioned attic space. It can save up to 50% on your energy bills. ![]() Icynene® is respected and recommended by some of North America's leading green and advanced building experts and programs such as Atlanta's EarthCraft House project, the Department of Energy's Building America program, and the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing. ![]() Healthier, Quieter & More Energy Efficient. When sprayed it expands 100 times its original volume in seconds to fill nooks and crannies to create a barrier against unwanted air leaks and energy loss. ![]() |
