Installing Icynene Spray Foam Installation

Icynene® insulation is a water-based formula that contains no formaldehyde, CFCs or HCFCs. The insulation has the texture and look of angel food cake and is made up of millions of tiny cells. These cells are filled with air and provide permanent control of air and airborne moisture movement. Icynene contains no materials that emit harmful gases. After 31 days, there are no emissions of any kind from the Icynene foam making it the perfect solution for people with allergies or chemical sensitivity.

Icynene is sprayed into exterior walls, on the underside of the roof deck, and on the underside of exposed floors (living space over unconditioned spaces like garages or porches). Icynene can also be sprayed in interior walls and ceilings for sound control. We believe so strongly in the effectiveness of the total envelope (unvented attic) system that we no longer install Icynene in walls only.

The Icynene Process

Applied as a liquid, sprayed on almost as thin as a coat of paint, Icynene expands up to 100 times its volume in a matter of seconds to fill every crack and crevice. Icynene foam remains soft and flexible so that the integrity of the building envelope remains intact over time. The foam acts as a complete insulation and air barrier system to minimize air leakage and seal the building envelope for the optimal air tightness. Only a trained and licensed Icynene dealer can install Icynene foam insulation.

After plumbing, electrical, and low-voltage wiring are complete and have been inspected, Icynene is installed. It expands 100 times, permanently adhering to the surfaces of the surrounding building materials and sealing all gaps.

For an average size home, it takes 2-3 days to install Icynene. Although the process may vary slightly, on a typical job, an Eco Tec Insulation crew will on site and go through the following procedure:

  • Foreman will walk the jobsite to determine most efficient installation plan and delegate to the crew who will:
    • Cover windows and doors with plastic
    • Cover electric boxes
    • Staple loose wires to studs
    • Cover & protect any appliances such as water heaters or air
    • Handling units from overspray.
    • Remove dirt & debris from wall cavities (If customer plans to have stained concrete floors, please make us aware so that we can take extra precaution to insure that no foam gets on the floor).
  • Following preparations, the sprayer will:
    • Apply Icynene (ECO TEC INSULATION’s top 3 sprayers have over 12 years experience applying Icynene).
  • Upon completion of the Icynene application, the crew will:
    • Scarf excess material in preparation for drywall (any foam that expands beyond wall studs).
    • Perform polyseal (apply caulk to double studs, top & bottom plate, and apply minimally expanding foam around windows and doors).
    • Clean-up (ECO TEC INSULATION will not leave empty metal drums on your site).

Proper Installation

Unlike other forms of insulation, Icynene can only be installed by licensed technicians. This ensures the highest level of quality and energy-efficiency. We guarantee proper installation for all of our clients and never take shortcuts in our work. This includes preparation, cleanup and of course installation. For example, we always ensure that all insulation remains flush, providing the closest seal and least impact on your house:
